Orem is the smallest of the five metropolitan areas in Utah and the only one without a large university or college presence. However, Orem's economy is based on its natural resources, including coal and uranium mining and processing. The area that would become Orem was first settled by Mormons in 1847 as part of what they called "the Great Salt Lake Valley." The town was platted in 1858 as a ranching community named Pleasant Grove after President James K. Polk's wife Emma geographicalsounding name for an agricultural center near Great Salt Lake City. In 1888 Pleasant Grove became the site of Brigham Young University (BYU), which had been founded six years earlier by Mormon president Heber C. Kimball to teach students from eastUtah and western Colorado who would soon inhabit Greater Los Angeles. At BYU-Orem students built more than 100 buildings on undeveloped land now within the city limits of Orem; these include such landmark structures as Kimball Chapel and WAC House. In 1907 Brigham Young University announced it would close its doors for good because of budget cuts following World War I; however, many students continued enrollment through correspondence courses or through out-of-state institutions such as BYU-Hawaii and USMuller College before finally leaving for their Alma Mater in 1919 when BYU reopened under new management with an expanded curriculum including law school offered jointly with Southern Methodist University (SMU). Today BYU offers over 120 undergraduate majors across ten faculties plus graduate degrees in business administration, engineering, law enforcement/firefighting/judicial law enforcement/paralegal studies, health sciences/medical assisting & allied health services/, theology & religion/, social work & public works/. In 1949 Brigham Young University again shut down its main campus due to budget constraints following World War II but many students continued to enroll through correspondence courses or through out-of-state institutions such as UTEP A&M Colorado and USMuller College before finally leaving for their Alma Mater in 1945 when BYU reopened under new management with an expanded curriculum including law school offered jointly with UTSA Houston (UTSA has since closed). Today UTSA Houston offers over 50 undergraduate programs across 10 faculties plus graduate degrees in business administration, engineering,, health sciences/medical assisting & allied health services/, theology & Religion (), social work & public works/.
