Orem, Utah is a town located in Davis County, Utah. It lies on the Wasatch Front and was founded by Mormon settlers in 1847. The population of Orem grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, reaching over 100,000 by 1910. Orem's economy has been based largely on agriculture since the early days of its settlement. However, recent economic growth has come from the development of business and professional services in downtown Orem and around the region. Today, Orem is one of the most vibrant small towns in central Utah. Mormon missionaries first came to Orem in 1847. At that time, it was an isolated frontier outpost with no established trade or commerce. Mormon pioneers were determined to establish a permanent Zion colony in what is now Davis County because they believed that this area would beEventuallythe site for their final resting place after they died on earth. When they reached what is now Orem, they found that there was only a single man living there who could speak English fluently - Elder George Quesnel - and he was not interested in trading goods or helping pioneer colonists build homes. The Mormons set up camp near Quesnel's cabin until they had enough men to build a better home themselves some time later (this event is typically known as "The Day After".). The first store opened in 1850 at what is now called Seventh Street and Katell Boulevard; it was run by James C Reidy from Emigration Station #2 north of Ogden City (now part of Logan). In 1861-1862 two other stores were opened: G W King Store #1 east of US Highway 16 about two miles south of present day Weber Road Bridge; and J H Brown Store #2 south side Main Street about three miles east of present day Iverson Lane off Big Cottonwood Road.).
