On July 1, 1868, the city of Orem, Utah was incorporated. The city is located in the Wasatch Mountains and it became one of the most heavily populated areas in Utah due to its location on the Great Salt Lake. The first houses were built on Rush Street just east of Center Street in 1870-71; these were replaced by frame buildings in 1907-08 when town limits were expanded to include modern neighborhoods to the north and west. In 1863, Brigham Young founded the Deseret News newspaper company in Provo, UT with printing presses located at Salt Lake City's Fillmore Arsenal and near downtown also used for printing local newspapers such as "The Republican" until 1902 when they moved operations uptown to Provo's First National Bank Building on Main Street where they remain today. Printing continued until 1958 at two adjacent buildings on Temple Square before moving to their current location on State Street near Beehive Junction

The Mayor has the power to veto ordinances passed by the city council but this rarely happens because of strong support from residents.
