Hickey and Jesse Winchester under the name “Hickey Arsenal” It functioned as a storage facility for rifle ammunition and firearms belonging to local farmers and ranchers. The armory remained active until it was closed down by the government during World War II due to its proximity to Japanese forces stationed in nearby Elko County. After the war, the armory property was sold off and used for various purposes including housing for displaced citizens during the 1950s through 1970s; however, it is still standing today thanks to efforts by locals who maintain it as a historical landmark open to visitors each year during October’s Gunfest event (www.oregongunfest). The first people to live in what is now Orem were Paiutes who called it "Hahahahegwam" meaning " Place of Springs." They built their homes near the spring that today's downtown Orem contains. In 1859, Brigham Young and his men journeyed from Nauvoo, Illinois to Salt Lake Valley and camped on the east side of Toole Creek. On July 26th they named this area Hahahahegwam (meaning " Springtown"). The next year they moved their camps to what is now Pioneer Park and started trading with local Native Americans. By 1861, Orem had a post office and was part of Weber County. A few years later Brigham Young decided to move the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from Nauvoo to Salt Lake City so he could more easily proselytize among new converts in these new surroundings. So on December 24th 1861, church members across Weber County gathered at Patriarchal House on State Street for an organizational meeting which resulted in the creation of a new ward – Zion Ward – within LDS church boundaries for Sturdy Grove Ranch which lay just north of present day Pioneer Park on Mormon Row. In 1872 when Logan Temple was dedicated by President George Albert Smith atopMount Zion Cemetery Grounds adjacent to Zions Chapel & Masonic Hall southwest corner Heber Jonson Parkway&southwest corner Kearney Road., Orem became one municipality within LDSchurch limits along with Provo & Grantsville as Australian Settlement Areas outside territorial bounds
