The town was named after Elder Orson Pratt, one of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). In 1870 a post office called Orem was established and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1934. In 1907 two water systems were installed within town limits: one for residents and another for workers at nearby utility companies which later became known as Deseret Water Services Incorporated (DWS). DWS maintains an open reservoir across from downtown that provides drinking water for over 300,000 people within its service area including about 100 miles radius around Salt Lake City; economic development around this reservoir has led to numerous new businesses being founded in recent decades. As part of efforts towards developing an urban center adjacent to Provo–Ogden metropolitan area, Orem incorporated as a city on November 11, 1984 with a population of 14,898 according to the United States Census Bureau’s estimate for 2000 census data however this figure did not include any growth since then due largely to annexation by Provo–Ogden which had a population over 24,000 when Orem incorporated but only 8,992 as of 2010

Orem is located on the eastern edge of the Great Salt Lake and bordered by Ogden to the east, Midvale to the west and Davis County to the south. The first inhabitants of what is now Orem were Mormons who arrived in 1847 from Illinois. They founded what became known as Zion City on an area that today includes most of downtown Orem. When Brigham Young organized his church in 1853, he named it after himself—Orem—in order to emphasize its religious significance. The city grew rapidly during pioneer days, thanks to its location near water resources and easy access to transportation. By 1880, Orem had become one of Utah's largest cities with a population of over 50,000 people. However, during World War II (1939-1945), Orem experienced significant damage from bombing raids by American forces; as a result, it lost much of its commercial and cultural diversity. Today, however, downtown Orem is still home to many businesses including several banks and restaurants which continue contribute significantly to local economic growth. In addition to its importance as an agricultural center for much of Utah during early settlement times (including cotton production), Mormon missionary work also played a significant role in shaping Orem into one of Utah's most religiously diverse communities today; many residents are either LDS or have some affiliation with other religions. In spite of this diversity – both within and outside the community itself—the city has managed to maintain close ties with surrounding areas since becoming part of centralUtah in 2002 following statehood celebrations there that year!
