Orem is a city in Davis County, Utah, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. Orem joins the Salt Lake City metropolitan area and is part of the Ogden-Clearfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what became Orem was George Miller in 1847. He and family built a log cabin on the east bank of Big Cottonwood Creek near present day Weber Road and Millcreek Drive. They named their new home "Millcreek", after a creek that ran through their farmstead. In 1858, John Sutter arrived in the area with his brother James Sutter and family to build a store on Big Cottonwood Creek opposite today's Weber Road and Millcreek Drive (now called North Kayser Boulevard). The town site was chosen because it lay between two ridges of mountains known as the Monument Mountains. The first post office was established at Millcreek in 1861, but it moved to its current location near Weber Road and Kayser Boulevard in 1865 due to strict railroad regulations that prevented towns from being located close to railroads. In 1871, Brigham Young issued an executive order ordering all settlers west of the Jordan River to move or face expulsion from Zion Canyon – which included milliners who were living east of the river within easy reach of LDS missionaries for marketing their products statewide). As a result, about 60 families chose to move into what would become Orem instead of facing expulsion; these families founded mills around what is now Weber Road/Kayser Boulevard including Snelling & Sons Paper Co., Western Union Telegraph Co., First National Bank (later Utah National Bank), Pioneer Store #2 (later Jordon Hardware), First Methodist Church (later First Unitarian Church), Masonic Lodge No 1 (founded 1865), Presbyterian Church (organized 1870) and Mormon Tabernacle Choir No 2 (founded 1875). By 1880, there were over 500 residents in Orem; by 1910 there were only 350 residents remaining after most businesses closed during prohibition and World War I destroyed most industry along the Wasatch Front. A fire burned down much of downtown Orem on October 24th 1908 destroying many buildings including three churches – First Methodist Episcopal church building on South Kayser Boulevard; Pioneer Store #2 building on North Kayser Boulevard; Masonic Lodge No 1 building on Weber Road/Kayser Boulevard which stood until 1970 when it was razed for Reclaimed Materials Yard development project; Second PresbyterianChurch building also on South Kayser Boulevard until 1970 when it also burned down for Reclaimed Materials Yard development project . During World War II business opportunities led many people out of town again towards Promontory Summit where they established Fillmore Manufacturing Company making munitions such as planes, tanks, artillery pieces etc.; but this too ended later when production shifted inland towards Provo while other mills continued operations until they closed or converted into apartments or used as storage units throughout the late 1960s through early 1980s following President Ronald Reagan’s efforts to stimulate local economy by creating jobs within commuting distance from cities during his eight years as governor
