Ogden, Utah is a city inIron County, Utah, United States. The population was 579 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1847 by Brigham Young and his men as the temporary capital of Deseret Territory. In 1851, Ogden became the permanent capital of Utah when Congress voted to change the federal Constitution to allow for statehood. The city has since been known for its zinc smelters, its Stonington leather industry, and its heavy manufacturing industries including aluminum and steel production.

The first white people to settle in the Ogden area were David Whitmer and his family in 1847. They built a cabin on the current site of Union Pacific Station. A post office called Ogden was established in 1851, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1857, Brigham Young appointed George Custer as captain of the 4th Cavalry Regiment and gave him land east of present-day Ogdensburg for a cavalry outpost named Fort Whitney. There were also settlements near present-day Cottonwood Heights and Cedar City before permanent habitation began around 1859. In 1863, Brigham Young designated part of Weber County as Ogden Valley Hundred for religious reasons; this part included much of today's west side of Weber County. Early produce crops grew here including potatoes, onions, tomatoes and corn; butter (butterfly) production started about 1865 when an animal husbandry clinic opened by Jeraldine Smith became successful with her use of three cows to churn out 52 pounds (23 kilograms) per day from raw milk alone. By 1870 there were over 150 homes and businesses within one mile (1 km) of what is now Main Street in downtown Ogden—the largest concentration ever seen outside Nauvoo at that time! On July 15, 1881, Brigham Young Fielding Hancock was ordained president of The Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), making him the first African American to be ordained as an apostle or leader within LDS church history; he immediately set about creating guidelines define LDS principles regarding polygamy which had been kept secret since its inception some 50 years earlier! On November 3rd 1898 President Heber Crouch designated Ogden home field for BYU’s inaugural football game against rival Deseret College on December 6th 1898 which ended with BYU prevailing 24–6 after scores being 0–0 through regulation time! It wasn't until 1916 that Ogden hosted its first NCAA sanctioned basketball tournament when teams from Provo participated; later tournaments would take place at Mynydd Brynolfy Stadium but still OGDEN WON all games except their last match against eventual champions Utah State on March 6th 1976!!! Finally Electric lights went up inside city limits effective October 9th 1906 !! Although OGDEN HAD ELECTRICITY FROM EARLY DAYS ITS BUSINESSES DIDN’T START USING IT UNTIL AFTER THAT TIME
