North Salt Lake is a city in Utah, United States. The population was 20,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Provo–Orem metropolitan area. North Salt Lake is bordered by Cedar City to the south and east, Tooele to the north, and South Jordan to the west. Founded in 1847 as a small Mormon settlement known as North Mill Creek Station on an ancient wagon road from Nauvoo, Illinois to St. George, Utah Territory,[1][2] North Salt Lake became one of the original 24 cities in Utah when it was admitted into statehood on November 3, 1896.[3] It was designated as a city on December 4, 1912[4] after voters passed an ordinance ratifying the creation of municipalities within newly organized Deseret County. On July 15, 1984,[5] North Salt Lake's annexation by Provo resulted in its current population size; however annexation did not result in any real growth until after Provo annexed several other towns and villages within Deseret County including West Valley City (now West Valley Village), Herriman Heights/Mountain View Hills/Eastvale Meadows/Glendale Heights on November 3, 1996[6], East Jerusalem Borough (then called East Jerusalem Township) on January 1st 2001,[7][8][9] Springdale Borough (then called Springdale) on January 1st 2002[10], American Fork Borough (then named American Fork) on January 1st 2003,[11],[12], Sandyhook Township (later named Sandy Hook) on October 17th 2006,[13], Logan Airport Municipal Airport which became operational September 30th 2007[14], and finally NorthSaltLakeCity Council Bluffs Municipal Airport which became operational June 5th 2009[15]. Bordering Cedar City to the south and east are Tooele and South Jordan which are both adjacent suburbs of Provo while Springdale borders American Fork to the north with Sandyhook located between them. North Salt Lake is a city in Utah, United States. The population was 25,879 at the 2010 census. North Salt Lake is located on the north bank of the Great Salt Lake, bordered by Weber County to the east and south, Davis County to the west and north, and Hinsdale County to the northwest. It has been nicknamed "The City of Destiny" because it has been home to many notable people in Utah history such as Brigham Young, Mitt Romney, Neil Armstrong and Russell Crowe. The city was named for General John C. Fremont who had died in 1847 while making an unsuccessful campaign for president of Mexico. Fremont's body was brought back from Mexico and given burial in Nauvoo until 1849 when Brigham Young purchased his remains and interred them with those of his father-in-law Joseph Smith in a plot near Kaneohe Bayou on Temple Square. In 1857 the City Council donated part of what is now Fremont Street between Fifth Avenue and Eighth Street to become Burbank Road which became known as Mormon Boulevard after Mormon founder Joseph Smith's death in 1844. On November 3rd 1870 Brigham Young designated North Salt Lake a city charter with a population of 20,000 residents. In 1907 North Salt Lake annexed portions of Davis and Weber Counties creating what is now called West Valley City on top of ancient Lamanite land that lay within both counties boundaries since before they were organized into counties). On July 1st 1916 NorthSaltLake incorporated as a town with its own government but retaining its name as an abbreviation for "north salt lake". The first Europeans to visit North Salt Lake were the Mormon Pioneers in 1847. The town was named for the salt lake which lay to the east of the valley and served as a natural harbor. The early years of the town were difficult, due to lack of resources. In 1850, Brigham Young founded Kirtland, Ohio and moved his headquarters there. One year later, Brigham Young called on George Smith to come west and lead a party across the Great Basin into Utah Territory. When George Smith reached North Salt Lake he found it empty and abandoned. He organized a group of men and set out in search of an Indian village or settlement where they could join up with other pioneers traveling westward. By July 1851, they had located what they thought was an Indian village but soon realized it was only a farmstead belonging to Captain John Dupleix of Spanish Fork who had recently returned from California with supplies necessary for his expedition against the Utes. The Mormons built their first house in North Salt Lake on July 12th, 1851. From here, they began evangelizing among the Paiutes and neighboring Native Americans who at that time numbered about fifteen thousand people spread over four hundred villages scattered throughout present-day Utah and Arizona
