In 1847–48 Mormon pioneers arrived from Illinois via wagon train under Hyrum Smith and started construction on what would eventually be called Kimball Terrace (later Kimball Park) just west of present day NorthSaltLake – this area later became known as Vail Ranch due to its proximity to Grouse Mountain National Park. Although it only lasted for brief periods due to Indian Wars waged by both sides, this initial settlement helped spur development throughout what would become Kane County over the next century culminating with the creation of downtown NorthSaltLake in 1907 when businesses along First Street amalgamated with other buildings located nearby including Temple Square Presbyterian Church which had been built earlier that year adjacent to then newly constructed LDS University (now Brigham Young University–Hawaii). As time went on various other civic building expansions took place such as an addition to Main Street Headquarters Building completed in 1951 prior to which another wing was added in 1971 named The Bailey Library after late Mayor Donny Bailey who had served since 1949 until his death 4 years later while still mayoralty eligible; however this wing closed subsequent operations due primarily to lack funding which has led some say it represents “the last gasp” characterizing current day redevelopment efforts within the city limits despite aspirations for more traditional downtown business functions etc.; today Main Street remains largely unchanged with only minor updates permitted since its original design circa 1907 A recent expansion project taking place within city limits includes revisions/updates planned for portions of First Avenue between South Temple Square Drive & South First Street resulting in increased pedestrian numbers & vehicular traffic flow during morning rush hours; initial plans call for demolition/replacement or renovation/expansion/maintenance & beautification activities within existing brick face walls along busy arterial roadway providing unique visual experiences not typically available elsewhere within city limits making Forney Bypass visible but also adding directly onto major shopping areas minutes away An aerial view looking southward down 1st Ave towards Temple square shows an improved layout with 5 lanes wide street now divided into 2 blocks each with 3 large yards between them giving more open space Downtown feels less constrained by commercial interests currently housing most offices if any are found immediately surrounding these high rises along 1st Ave leaving Residential District feeling quite open spaced out although there may be occasional visits by high profile people or events
