That agreement became effective on January 1st 1998 and was known as "North Provo Metro." The merged community has since grown to include 27 suburbs and 21 villages spread across 7 counties including Davis County (the largest county in Utah), Carbon County (largest county east of Interstate 80), Iron County (largest county west of Interstate 80), Kane County (largest county south of Interstate 160), Juab County (second largest county east of Interstate 160) and Sanpete County (second largest county west of I-80). The citizens elected their first Mayor and Councilmember on January 3rd 2013 after three years without anyone from either party being selected to serve for four consecutive terms beginning February 4th 2013 through present Day; current Mayor is Rocky Anderson who took office on February 4th 2017

In 1847 Brigham Young proposed that all Mormons be moved from Nauvoo, Illinois to Winter Quarters on the south side of Great Salt Lake so they could start their own colony there and name it NorthSaltLake after their new homeTownsite. The idea was met with resistance from some Saints because they wanted to keep their original homes and businesses in Nauvoo while relocating to fresh land. Ultimately, 9,000 Saints were relocated to Winter Quarters and NorthSaltLake became reality in 1848 when Mormon pioneers arrived here from Illinois under leader Lorenzo Snow

Cannon, a settler who arrived in 1846 and donated land to the LDS Church. The first Mormon temple was built in this city in 1850. In 1862, Brigham Young ordered the construction of a large brick mill on the site of present-day downtown North Salt Lake City. This mill became one of the largest and most important businesses in the city before it closed its doors in 1984.
