The lantern-style light became popularized after World War I when war effort made it necessary for soldiers on both sides of the conflict to carry around large, mobile lights. Lanterns continued to be used until the early 1940s when gaslights began becoming more common and easier to use. Lanterns eventually fell out of favor as guns became increasingly effective at shooting targets at long distances and illuminated areas became necessary for night hunting or navigation during wartime. North Salt Lake, Utah is a city in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 25,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County and home to NorthSaltLake University which is one of the largest universities in Utah. Prior to the arrival of Europeans in what is now North Salt Lake in 1847, it was an area known as Goshute but today most residents are descendants of Mormon pioneers who arrived there during the 1880s and 1890s. The economy of North Salt Lake relies largely on agriculture and support services provided by government entities such as Kane County State Park and UT Health Services Regional Medical Center. The first European to see what lay within today's boundaries of Kane County was Juan Cabrillo on October 14, 1542 while sailing for California from New Spain via Panama City harbor. He named a point "Goshute" (pronounced "GO-sha'tuh"), west ofpresent-day North Salt Lake after his Indian guide Chief Goshute who had accompanied him on this exploration voyage. In 1847 Brigham Young sent two men - ridicule John Coyle with an epithet meaning "the great white brother" - overland from Provo to explore what would become Utah Territory. One man reached Goshute while the other reached present day Kearney before reaching Cache Valley where they spent wintering near present day Logan in February 1848; their journey east across ensuing snow-covered slopes ended up leading them northwest into today's Cache Valley about 12 miles northwest oftoday's border town of Dordogneville circamile southwest ofCache Valley itself just south dune line between Cache Valley lands and Mexican land grants he had legislative intent to purchase from Mexico pursuant to Treaty #6 dated December 10, 1846 Acknowledging that Mexico had ceded these parts including much northeastern Utah back under Mexican sovereignty following its war with United States November 30th & January 6teenth, 1846 1 pioneer woman died trying crossing desert

North Salt Lake, Utah is a city in the U.S. state of Utah and the county seat of Weber County. The population was 22,711 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Weber County after Ogden and Centerville. North Salt Lake is also home to Weber State University, one of only two universities in Utah with a full-time student body of over 10,000 students. The area that now makes up North Salt Lake was first settled by Mormon pioneers in 1847 as part of what would become Weber County. The town was founded on the site of present day North Salt Lake City on April 12, 1851 by David Whitmer and others as a stop on the ill-fated Pony Express route between Nauvoo, Illinois and Oregon Trailhead east of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. In 1858 Brigham Young called upon his Latter Day Saints to move westward into what would eventually become Utah due to increasing tensions with Mexico over land grants made to Mexicanados during Mexican rule. On July 24, 1860 President James Buchanan issued Executive Order 9981 which authorized President Lincoln to purchase 2 million acres (8 km²) from local ranchers known as "the Paiutes" for public use within newly organized United States territory west of Mexico City including what is now north-central Utah Territory. The order also specified that no Indian tribe or individual should be given an exemption from payment for this land purchase; all payments were to be made through vouchers which could be redeemed at frontier post stores or by Native American leaders themselves if they so desired On October 15th 1860 Brigham Young announced via telegraph message from Nauvoo that he had received orders from God directing him to move westward into what became Utah A group led by plural marriage pioneer John Taylor traveled eastbound on horseback outfitting for their movement across country but were killed while riding when they stopped near Council Bluffs Iowa en route on November 1st 1861 On December 21st 1861 Brigham Young again ordered operation (including travel back East) under new authority given him by LDS Apostle Lorenzo Snow . This time about 50 young men numbering about 160 people set off together downriver on wagons pulled by teamsters under the command ofCaptain Charles Cushman across crystal clear waterlogged terrain where there seemed little hope for success despite being well supplied with food and water according to some accounts followed news reports reporting favorably upon their progress until December 27th when nightfall halted their march short of Cache Valley having lost more than half their number including Captain Cushman who drowned trying unsuccessfully to cross a creek ) Consequently this event has comely been called "The Great Famine" although it did not cause famine though it did kill many people .) In 1863 Congress passed Public Land Act No 7 which granted 640 square miles (~2 km²) adjacent today's north centralUtah Territory comprising most or all modern NorthSaltLakeCity excluding much acreage now within Cedar Mesa east Mesa Heights south Summitville northwest Logan Heights northeast Provo currently lying within UT boundaries taking away any remaining incentives for settlers moving into this area .) It grew rapidly due to its location and easy access to railroad transportation. In 1870, the first post office was established in North Salt Lake. By 1907, the population had increased to over 1,000 people. The town experienced a growth spurt during World War II as many local businesses developed wartime production needs. After the war ended, the population declined until it reached its peak in 1981.
