In 1882, North Ogden incorporated as a city and has since grown rapidly with its suburbs extending into Davis and Emery Counties to the south and east. In 1853, John Browning developed his first revolver using a six-gauge shotgun barrel. By 1896, all pistols using smoothbore barrels were outlawed in the United States because they were considered dangerous and unsafe. However, this prohibition was lifted in 1966 after passage of the National Firearms Act Amendments (NFA). This statute made it legal for civilians to own and use firearms with barrels that are at least 8 inches in length by 2 1/2 inches in diameter.
North Ogden was founded in 1847 by Major General David Rice as a Mormon colony. The town became the largest and most important Mormon settlement in Utah. It was located on the edge of what is now Salt Lake City, on the San Rafael Mountains. North Ogden grew rapidly, becoming an important agricultural center and serving as a key transportation hub for Mormons travelling to their meetinghouses in Salt Lake City. The community also developed a strong cultural presence, with many famous North Ogdens including Brigham Young, founder of Mormonism; LDS Church president Ezra Taft Benson; author Orson Scott Card; and political leader Leland Stanford. In 1902, North Ogden was renamed Provo after Provo Canyon – its original name – when the city developed near it on the Utah-Arizona border. In 1960, Provo became the capital of Utah after being chosen as the interim seat of government following Salt Lake City's closure during World War II. Today, North Ogdens major thoroughfare is called "Providence Road" in honor of this history.
