North Ogden, Utah is a town in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 3,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. North Ogden is known for its Kiwanis Club and outdoor events such as the Ogden Fair which are held every August. The name "Ogden" comes from the Oglala Sioux word "yagoda", meaning "place where water meets earth." The first European to visit this area was Captain James Cook in 1769-70 when he mapped out what is now Kane County on hisvoyage around the world. In 1847, Brigham Young founded The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) in this territory and named it North Ogden after his new headquarters in Nauvoo, Illinois. The first post office in North OgDEN was established on July 14, 1872, by Wm Sibley with Purdy as his second post office. On November 1st 1870 Verne Fenton opened up a store at 840 N First St., one of only three storekeepers open during that time; all others were closed because of lack of customers or salt market demand caused by overpopulation near Provo city limits. On October 4th 1912 an act to incorporate North OgDEN was passed and took effect on October 5th 1912 with Joseph Laughlin as Mayor and George Kapp as Town Clerk; both men had been appointed by Logan based upon their local political experience and acumen rather than from outside appointment or electioneering considerations like those given to future mayors Dallin Haughton (January 1912), Orson Hyde (November 1913), Alonzo Mourning (March 1915), Clyde Kimball (July 1917) or Michael Moriarty (November 1919). A blacksmith shop operated by John Cramer from 1907 until 1908 when it moved to 710 E Main Street due to color line discrimination against African Americans then existing within Mormonism at that time. This shop became known as the "Cramer forge". A blacksmith shop located adjacent at 625 E Main Street continues operations today under the name Black Diamond Forge & Smelter LLC; it has been family run since 1978 by two generations of owners: Donny & Dee Mortenson who started it as a small oneForge smelting operation before moving into hammer manufacturing in 1984; their daughter Brooke Mortenson currently runs it along with her father’s business partner Brent Weiser having joined them recently from Nevada Statehood Watchtower Bible & Tract Society warehouse operations there.
