North Ogden, Utah is one of the most historically significant cities in the United States. The city was founded in 1847 by Mormon pioneers and is home to Brigham Young University (BYU), one of the largest universities in North America. Other notable landmarks include Osmond Park, which was developed on the former site of a military post that served as a springboard for Mormon settlement in what is now North Ogden; and Salt Lake City's Central Business District, which has been called "the heart of Utah." The city was named for North Ogden, New York, a town near Utica where Brigham Young first met Joseph Smith and began his translation of the Bible. After moving eastward from Nauvoo, Illinois, the Mormons established their headquarters at North Ogden in 1847. The area around present-day North Ogden had been inhabited by Native Americans since before European exploration arrived in what are now Utah and Nevada. In 1846, Mormon missionaries discovered gold near present-day Salt Lake City and decided to settle there. In March 1847, David Waddell dispatched five men overland from Burlington, Vermont to explore this new land. Upon arrival at Promontory Point on April 12th they discovered an area that would soon become known as Provo (then spelled Provo). Waddell named this new spot Fort Deseret after Petrus Proctor—a British settler who had explored and mapped this part ofUtah Territory back when it included much of what is now South Dakota and Wyoming. In October 1847 two more men set out from Burlington with instructions to find water supplies for their community while exploring northeastward into Colorado Territory. They reached Canby Creek about 20 miles north of modern day North Olathe after traveling for three days without finding any water or timber. On November 5th Orson Pratt—a member of LDS bishopric who later became president of BYU—ordered all residents within 10 milesof Cache Valley Seminary to move due to concerns about possible floods caused by heavy rains upstream. This order forced many families living along Canby Creek downstream into tents or wagons until winter weather improved; during these harsh conditions some people killed small game they found while others successfully gathered wood sufficient enough to build fires throughout the winter season. From Cache Valley they walked another 50 miles downriver before reaching the Upper Missouri River on December 1st.—a journey that took them six days total.—By December 4th all but eight members (including David Waddell) of Fort Deseret were dead from exposure and dehydration following weeks-long trek across difficult terrain covered with snow drifts high enough to reach your knees.—This event marks one of greatest losses among early Latter Day Saint settlers in Utah.—Back at Fort Deseret onlyfour men remaining went back river againtowards Cache Valley Seminary on January 3rd1848 under orders from Brigham Young himself.; These four men built a temporary fortification aroundCache Valley using logs left over from previous construction projects at fort deseret
North Ogden was founded in 1853 by James W. Belden and others as the town of North West Egg. The name change to North Ogden in 1879 because of the growth of the town on the east side of the Weber River. The first post office was established in 1878, and the first school was built in 1880. In 1907, a new shopping center was constructed south of the old post office and school. The population reached 100,000 in 1960, and by 2006 it had decreased to 80,000.
