Murray is a town in Sevier County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Murray is located on State Route 191 and is bordered to the south by Parkland and to the north by Cottonwood Heights. Murray was founded in 1887 as Cedar Grove Village by families from eastern Scotland who had settled in southern Utah after fleeing sectarian violence in their home country. In 1912, Murray was renamed for Ulysses S. Grant, then America's first president with an Irish background. The name change came about when local businessmen decided that "Grant" sounded more like an American hero than a Scottish gentleman. The community of Murray grew rapidly during World War II because many residents worked on government farms or military bases supplying food for troops overseas; during that time there were no schools or stores within walking distance of each other. After the war ended, many people left Murray for good because of high prices for real estate and lack of opportunities to earn a living outside of agriculture or service work; however, some stayed behind to build new homes and businesses over the next few decades. In recent years, Murray has seen its population grow again due to migration from surrounding counties and cities as well as births among its current residents; while still small compared to other towns in Sevier County, it has made significant progress since 2009 when it achieved city status through annexation by Salt Lake City proper. As recently as 2000, only 2 percent of Murray's workforce had a college degree; today almost half of all workers have at least one college degree (despite having fewer jobs). Today's residents are diverse: most are citizens or permanent residents of other countries but also include several dozen refugees from Syria who have fled civil war there since 2007; two-thirds are Protestant (the rest being Mormon), making it one of the most religiously diverse towns in Utah; and nearly all children attend school until middle school before heading off into various forms of adult education or employment upon reaching age 25 or 30 (although beginning high school remains an important partof young people's lives here).

Murray, Utah is a small town in Davis County on the edge of the Wasatch Mountains. It was founded in 1876 by settlers from eastern Scotland and Ireland. The first post office was established in Murray in 1880. In 1912, the town became a city. Murray is located at 38°14′N 110°24′W (38.2128 N 110.4158 W). The history of Murray begins with its founding as a small Scottish settlement on the edge of the Wasatch Mountains. From this small community, many pioneers helped to create what would become Murraytown, one of America’s most significant towns during its early years. In 1876, when Utah was admitted to the Union as a state, Murray became one of her many new burghers! Many prominent men and women from throughout Utah contributed their time and expertise to make this community grow and thrive over these years.Among those who helped make Murray an important player in American history were Drury Halliday and his wife Mary Ann; Rev John Ritchie; Mayor John Cain; J C & W Hargrave; Mr & Mrs Fenton; A & P Baird; J G Holmes Sr.; Mrs Leslie Laddie Robertson (née McKenzie); Mrs Marion Sayers-Ferguson (died young); Dr Florence McMurtry Howe; Rev Angus McLaren (1861-1936), mayor for two terms 1928-30, 1932-35 and 1938–40; Ethel Forbes Wilder (1894-1964) president of Brigham Young University from 1951 until her death in 1964.; James Hultgren (1887-1966), treasurer general for the LDS Church 1955-59., Edwin Ferguson(1901–1976), farmer who served as mayor 1929–34alderman 1945-, Harry Bachelder(1920—1978), policeman 1924–29and 1931—33and 1935—37., Gordon Dyermeyer(1910—1984)), manager at The Fuel Depot 1922—-27*, clerk 1930—-39*, storekeeper 1941—-43* (*Gordon Dyermeyer also worked as an electrician.) In 1916, when Salt Lake City was founded adjacent toMurraytown, much growth took place within that new city as well! This increase can be partially attributed to bothxdependence on Valley Ranch freight traffic originating fromMurraytown for goods sold throughout Utah but also becauseofthemany talented individuals who had moved to Salt Lake City during those early years: architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright and engineers such as George Stephenson among others.(See Table 1 below for more detailed information about some notable residents or events that led to increased settlement activity within Murraytown during these years.)
