The Murray-Pope School District is one of the largest school districts in Utah. The history of Murray begins with three families who arrived in 1847 on a wagon train from Independence, Missouri. They were met by John Pope, a Mormon captain and founder of the church in Utah. The three families combined to form the nucleus of what would become Murray Village. In 1870, Brigham Young assigned surveyor George Quesnel to plat out a town site on land that had been donated by Colonel James Cato. Quesnel's plat included a schoolhouse and two stores - one east of the other - which became known as "Murray Square." In 1881, Jens Christensen (a Norwegian immigrant) founded the first grocery store in Murray square. A post office was established there in 1887 and named for Captain Pope (the first postmaster). In 1907, Jens Christensen's son-in-law Wenzel Hansen opened Palace Garden Nursery & feed store on Second Street between Main and Center Streets which remained open until it closed its doors in 1984 due to economic difficulties; it is now known as Hansen's Hardware Store #2. In 1911, Hyrum Smith (an apostle) visited Murray square and recommended that funds be raised for an Agricultural Experiment Station to be established at Cedar City. As part of this effort, money was collected from farmers throughout Weber County for shipment to Cedar City where preparations were made for building the station including purchasing land from David Wittenberg (founder of Deseret News). On July 24th 1913 President Heber C Kimball dedicated Cedar City’s Agricultural Experiment Station after its construction began that year under authorization from President John F Kennedy; president Lyndon B Johnson also attended ceremony later that year! With groundbreaking taking place on October 6th 1914 following completion of installationof all necessary equipment including water tanks and electric lights at main entrance gate CJES continued providing research intotilth control (planting), soil fertility (farming), Insect management (pest prevention), water clarity disorders etc.; during WWI especially CJES conducted research into aircraft production! It should be noted that prior to establishment of JCES there were many private institutions operating within Moran Valley such as “The Grapesvine” winery operated by Elisha Hyde starting off with 20 acres near present day Highway 149 just south of Camas Junction;; however these operations did not survive through World War I when agriculture became more important then wine making; like so many others around Moron Valley these businesses went out OF BUSINESS! Murray Square developed into what is today called "Murray Township", while adjacent Second Street became "Church Road". Both streets are still used today primarily for transportation purposes although Church Road has been narrowed some distance northward along Interstate 15 so traffic can move freely around various churches located along its length including Christ United Methodist Church #1A situated at 191st Place South & Haggin Avenue NE; Kirkland Congregational Chapel built 1906 @ 227 East Haggin Avenue NE also resides on Church Road; All Saints Episcopal Parish built 1902 @ 255 West Main Street SE also resided on Church Road before being moved to its current location next door to All Souls Catholic Parish property which includes an elementary/middle school #4A situated @ 259 North Main Street SE& Crossroads Shopping Center which opened November 1st 2006 contains about 180 retail storefronts inside 5 levels totaling 421,...read more

In 2000 the town closed its doors for good after years of financial struggles caused by environmental abuses from local businesses and lack of funding from state or federal agencies
