In 1871 the town population reached 535 residents and by 1902 it had increased to 1,527 residents. During World War I the city served as an ammunition dump for Utah Regiments. After the war the city became a lumber center and also developed into a major agriculture center with many mills and farms located in the area. The population of Murray decreased from its peak in 1902 to just under 1000 residents by 1960 however it has since grown again with many new businesses being opened in recent years including several hospitals and schools which have helped contribute to the current population of around 14K people. In 2002-2003 there were several protests against proposed changes to zoning laws that would have reduced building permits available for certain types of residences near urban areas such as Murray which could have led to significant reductions in housing options for residents. This protest led to increased police presence in the area which ultimately did not result in any changes to zoning laws
