Murray is a small town in Bears Ears County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cedar City–Orem metropolitan area. Murray is located on the eastern edge of the Bears Ears National Monument and on the Iron Mountains east of Cedar City. The first Europeans to visit what is now Murray were Spanish traders in 1795. John Wesley Powell passed through the area in 1869 while exploring Laramie Canyon and named it for George Murray, an American diplomat who had been involved in settling that region. A post office was established at Murray in 1902, and by 1915 there were over 100 residents living there. In 1938, a small irrigation project called Canisto Project was initiated to provide water for agriculture near present-day Murray and Pine Valley villages along Canisteo Creek. The original goal was to bring water from Fish Lake but this failed because of low levels of dissolved oxygen in the creek's water column; however, subsequent projects increased irrigation capacity and improved water flow to Canisteo Project until it became a major agricultural reservoir with 830 acre feet (27 km3) available at its peak in 1995. In 2006, two earthquakes occurred within 3 miles (5 km) of Murray: one 6.7 magnitude and one 7.8 magnitude which caused no damage but woke up many people who live close by as well as some people who evacuated during both quakes due to fears of aftershock activity or landslides following either quake alone or together with other events such as fires or floods that week across much of Utah

Polk presidency (1844-1849). In 1851 Brigham Young assigned John Dallin to lead a group of Mormons westward on horseback through what is now Arizona Territory towards Mexico City via San Pedro Valley before reaching Salt Lake Valley on July 12th 1852 where they took up permanent residence. On November 15th 1853 they built their first temple at Temple Lot which later served as the home of President Joseph Smith from 1830-1846 and his family until he was martyred at Carthage Jail on April 14th 1844 while under arrest for polygamy. From Nauvoo House some 50 miles north along I-15 there existed another large building known as Kimball House constructed between 1851-1855 by George Quesada about three miles east of present day Murray on State Route 24B just south of Kimball Meadow Park
