Murray, Utah is a small town located in Kane County, Utah. It was founded in 1887 by John Murray and named for him. The population of Murray was 582 at the 2010 census. John Murray arrived in what is now Kane County, Utah on July 3, 1887, from Ohio with his family. He purchased 640 acres of land west of the Wasatch Mountains and began to build a home and farmstead. The first structure built in Murray was a log cabin thatched with hay and straw. By 1890, John had built two more homes and started to provide services such as groceries, laundry and transportation to the area around him. In 1895 he married Lillie Ann Barnes who also came from Ohio. They had five children: one son died young; four daughters lived to adulthood. The early days of Murray were difficult because there was no water available for crops or for drinking or irrigation purposes. However, over time things changed for the better asMurray became an agricultural center due to its location close to rivers, springs and lakes which provided water for farming activities as well as mills which produced flour, tapestries and other items necessary for daily life in those days. In 1912 it was decided that the town should be renamed after General George Custer due to his role in helping protect Manifest Destiny during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). So on November 12th of that year residents of Murray voted unanimously to change their name to Custer City following General Custer's death at the Battle of Buena Vista on October 6th of that year while leading American troops against Mexico forces under Pancho Villa
