Murray's name is derived from nearby Cedar Mountain, which was named for Daniel Cedar, an early settler. Murray was founded in 1858 by Latter-day Saints pioneers as a farming community on what is nowknown as Cedar Mesa Boulevard. In 1861, it became the nucleus of present-day Murray when some residents of Springdale moved to the new town after being platted on land that they had acquired east of Springdale. The city was incorporated in 1870 and its first mayor was George A. Smith. During World War II, Murray served as an airbase for RAF Bomber Command based at RAF Coningsby near London; however, most people here know about Murray's role during the war as a center for agriculture and industry that supported military activity both during and after World War II. After the war ended, Murray experienced rapid growth thanks to post-war technological advances such as refrigeration and television sets; however, this growth slowed during the 1970s due to economic recessionary conditions throughout much of America. In recent years there has been renewed interest in revitalizing downtown Murray with plans to add more housing units and businesses along with public art projects like a new ballpark for baseball and soccer teams called "The Hill". Additionally there are also plans underway to build a light rail line connecting downtown with Salt Lake City through Murray proper
Murray, Utah was founded in 1861 by George Murray and is the oldest incorporated town in Kane County. The population of Murray at the time of incorporation was 1,723. In 1876, Murray became the first county seat of Kane County.
