The community was named for Brigham Young, who had been president of the LDS Church from 1847 to 1852. In 1863, after being made a county seat of Kane County, Murray became the home of both the United States territorial government and what is now the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The local economy has consistently been based on agriculture and ranching since its beginnings; however, other businesses have grown up around this agricultural base as well: coffee shop/café/barringer's grocery store (since 1984), power plant (1987), pet stores (2006-present), disbanded steel mill (2008-present) and several restaurants over time including Pinnacle Steakhouse & Lounge (1976-2007), Cafe Reynosa (1988-1990), Everest Pizza & Grill (1996-2003) and Red Rock Resort Casino BBQ Park(2009). In recent years Murray's reputation as an educational center has increased; it is home to Northern Utah Community College District #4 Campus for Continuing Education and Training as well as two high schools - Wright School District #2A which opened in 2005 adjacent to Northern Utah Community College District #4 Campus and Rushmore School District #1 which opened in 2002 adjacent to Weber State University campus. It also houses one of America’s largest independent libraries with more than 20 million books checked out each month.

Murray, Utah is a small town located in Kane County, Utah. The population was 1,814 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. Murray was named after General James A. Murray who served as commander of the Union Army during the American Civil War and also founded the city of Murray, Utah in 1881. The original inhabitants were Native Americans who hunted and gathered resources near what is now Murray. In 1864, Brigham Young sent a party of Mormon pioneers to explore what would become Kane County and settle it on March 12th, 1867 by proclamation from President Abraham Lincoln with instructions that no more Indian settlements should be established within ten miles of Missouri River. The settlement was called West Valley because it lay west of present-day Murray on high ground above water level for fear that floods might wash away their homes and leave them vulnerable to attack by Sioux or other Indians. On July 10th, 1890, when Kane County was organized into counties and made up of several townships including West Valley under jurisdiction of Salt Lake City, West Valley became part of Murray Township which then became part of Kane County through an act passed by the Territorial Legislature on November 5th, 1889. In 1901, when Congress enacted legislation providing for consolidated government under one national government throughout all United States territories (except Hawaii), Kane County became one unit with its own county seat at West Valley which remained so until 1959 whenMurray replacedWestValley as the county seat following a move by rural residents to support their local community despite objections from eastside residents led by Mayor Harry Haleschall who desired annexation into Salt Lake City. In 1960 voters approved adoption of a new official name for the county - Murray - honoring General James A .Murdock (1831-1908) who commanded Ulysses S . Grant's army alongthe Frontier in 1868-69 while serving as military governor during Reconstruction following the American Civil War and later founded Morrisonville here in 1881 with his family before moving to eastern Oregon where he died two years later aged 72 years old having accomplished great things in his lifetime including founding Morrisonville which today remains an important center for ranching and farming operations in this isolated corner of Utah

The population of Murray grew rapidly after it became a township in 1850. The first post office was established in 1851, and the first school was built in 1861. In 1875, Murray began to develop into a small town with its own Industrial Park and numerous businesses. The population growth also led to an increase in housing prices, which helped make the town one of the most expensive on the Wasatch Front.
