By 1860, nearly all Mormons living in Iowa had deserted Mormonism and moved north into Utah Territory because it seemed too difficult to hold onto their beliefs when faced with hostile neighbors across the Great Lakes region (the United States). Those early Mormons built homes that still stand today on acres donated by local farmers; they also developed a heavy industry based on building tools and other products made from natural resources such as coal, wood, flour, cheese, potatoes, salt pork and cotton (oilseed production began later). In the 1960s Midvale resumed its rapid growth rate, reaching a peak population of around 60,000 in 1970 before experiencing significant declines due to various causes such as suburbanization and environmental degradation. By 2000 Midvale had fallen below 30,000 residents for the first time since its founding.
