Midvale, Utah is a city in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 18,865 at the 2010 census. Midvale is located on the banks of the Sevier River. Midvale was one of eight cities that formed Kane County in 1907. It became a city in 1968. The first settlement in what would become Midvale was made by George Harker and his family on January 24, 1847 when they attempted to cross the Sevier River from Idaho Territory into Oregon Territory. They were successful and built a small log cabin which served as their home for the next several years until they could find more permanent property. In 1861 Mormon pioneers arrived in what would become Midvale and began construction on what would become their pioneer town site. The first post office was established at Midvale on December 12, 1861 under the name North Promontory (later renamed Kaneville). The name change came about because it was determined that there were no other settlements within sight of North Promontory so long as it remained unoccupied; also known as "the Promontory." In 1865 Brigham Young organized Deseret Valley Company No. 2 to explore straddling present-day Utah/Arizona border for new land grants that might be available east of Cedar Mesa range including parts of today's Kane County. Midvale grew quickly due to its location opposite Cedar Mesa Range and its easy access to transportation including stagecoaches from Stapleton Landing along Clear Creek south to Provo Canyon and then all the way north to Salt Lake City via Cedar Mesa Pass whereupon passengers transferred onto wagons heading east over Purgatory Ridge into Arizona territory now part of Colorado Springs before crossing US Highway 6 into eastern Wyoming finally reaching Salt Lake City via Union Pacific Depot right near Main Street corner with Market Square today's Downtown area just south of I-15 exit 221A.(see map) Missouri Compromise had been passed two days earlier creating Utah Territorial boundaries which included eastern Cherry Creek valley lying between Pahvant Hills Observatory Hill on present day Utah side slopes above creek bottom eastwardly trending northeast (including much current Eagle Mountain National Forest) southeastwardly trending northwesterly trending across intervening intervening valleys later forming Rushmore Wilderness Preserve while most or all Cherry Creek watershed lies within Carboniferous Limestone Hills Wilderness Preserve today's Park Meadows community northwest of Interstate 15 exit 221B.) midValleyUtahMap
