Midvale is a small town in Utah that has been around since the early 1880s. The town was named after Brigham Young, the founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Midvale is home to some of the most interesting and preserved LDSChurch history in the United States. The first settlers in Midvale were farmers who arrived in 1881. They built their homes on the edge of a large salt lick and started to grow crops. By 1899, Midvale had a population of about 150 people. By 1910, however, Midvale had more than doubled its population and began to buildroads and other infrastructure. In 1922, President Heber J. Grant issued an order calling for all Mormon missionaries to leave Utah for fear that they might be used as leverage against localanti-Mormon sentiment. A few weeks later, on October 15th, 22 Mormons were killed when a train drove into a Salt Lake City water tower while on their way to work. This event helped start what would become known as the "midvale massacre." After this tragedy, much consternation over how Mormon missionaries could travel across state lines was expressed by church leaders. In 1930, LDSChurch authorities moved all temples from Nauvoo, Illinois to Mesa Arizona because they felt that there was too much anti-Mormon sentiment developing in Arizona at that time. However, many locals objected to having any religious institutions near them – especially those belonging to groups like Mormonism which they considered blasphemous and heretical。 In 1934–35 there was another attempt by Mormon missionaries to establish themselves in Midvale along with two other towns within 30 miles of Mesa AZ: Peoria Heights (in central Phoenix) and Scottsdale (in northwest Phoenix). These missions failed due largely to lack of support from local residents who saw these efforts as simply another example of Mormons trying too hard where they didn't belong; furthermore it was clear that these new settlements would only serve as recruitment tools for larger LDSChurch operations already located throughout Arizona.) The name of the town changed to Midvale due to its location on the Jordan River. In 1880, Midvale became a county seat and has remained so ever since. The population of Midvale peaked at over 10,000 in 1920, but has slowly decline since then. Today, the population of Midvale is about 7500 people.
