Lindon is located on the east side of the Salt Lake Valley, about 33 miles (53 kilometers) south of downtown Salt Lake City. The town was founded in 1877 by Mormon pioneers who had fled Brigham Young's religious dictatorship in Nauvoo, Illinois. Lindon grew slowly until World War II when it became a major center for munitions production due to its proximity to Utah's then-largest munitions plant. The plant closed in the early 1990s but has left a lasting legacy on Lindon as an industrial powerhouse that has attracted new businesses and residents over the years. Today, Lindon remains an intimate community with close-knit relationships between its residents and its elected officials - including four mayors and two vice mayors - as well as its sizable local business community. Mormons were struggling against reestablished native American tribes at this time and needed lodges or stopovers along their migration westward. In response to this need, five men – George Wittell, James Bitton, John Fenton, Sidney Rigdon III (soon renamed Brigham Young) and Orson Pratt – pooled their money and purchased 1,000 acres (500 hectares) east of present day Lindon on Decatur Creek for $5 per acre ($25 per family). In 1902, when it became part of Bears Ears National Monument, Lindon saw its first Native American residents arrive with the arrival of two groups of Mormon missionaries who were seeking to convert local Paiute Indians into Christianity. This influx led to increased activity in the community as newcomers started trading goods and services with local tribes before eventually settling down in what is now known as Eldorado Park neighborhood within central Lindon. With growing tourism industry opportunities becoming available throughout Utah during the late 20th century, further growth ensued for the small town over time including construction of new schools, churches and businesses along with ever-growing numbers of residents moving into Lindon from surrounding areas including Provo and Orem respectively. Today there are only a few remaining residences scattered among empty lots while most commercial buildings have been demolished or converted into residential units such as condos or apartment complexes catering primarily to tourists who come through Alden Canyon Open Air Market on Friday nights or during events like summer festivals hosted by nearby Brigham Young University (BYU).
Lindon was founded in 1872 by George A. Lindon and his wife, Emma. The town grew quickly, and in 1880 it had a population of 230 people. In 1912, the Lindons donated land to the city of Ogden for a new school district. Lindon became an incorporated town in 1916.
