Lindon, Utah is a small town in Carbon County, Utah that was founded in 1854. The population of Lindon was 587 at the 2010 census. The Lindon Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The village currently has a population of about ninety-five and is located along State Route 191 northeast of Cedar City. Lindon began as an agricultural outpost on the eastern edge of Cedar City, and eventually became a hub for Mormon pioneers moving westward during the 1800s. In 1854, Brigham Young sent his brother Willard with twelve men to found a new settlement in what is now Carbon County near Cache Valley Lake. The founders named their new community after John A. Lindon, one of Young's assistants on the First Vision expedition into southern Utah in 1824. By 1860, Lindon had grown to include over 100 residents and two stores. In 1862, when Salt Lake County was organized, Lindon became part of it and continued to grow until its incorporation as a city in 1976. Today, Lindon remains a small town with strong ties to its history and culture - including its annual parade which features local dignitaries and floats made from various items collected throughout the year by residents along SR 191 (the "LindON parade"). Today, Lindon is an extremely diverse community with over 100% Native American ancestry according to the 2010 census estimates. As one of only two Mormon towns remaining within Utah’s borders (the other being Provo), its history is significant both historically and culturally. Additionally, its location on Route 191 – just outside of Ogden – makes it very convenient for residents and businesses located within easy reach of both Salt Lake City and Denver Airport/Airport Village. Although Lindon experienced some negative moments during its short history (e chief among them being closure of its schools due to budgetary restraints), overall it has made significant contributions to Utah culture and history as well as becoming an incredibly important center for Native American communities throughout the state.
Lindon was founded in 1902 by George W. Lindon and his wife, Emma. The town was named after nearby Lindon Canyon, which the Lindons saw as a fertile area for farming. In 1916, the Lindons donated land to the city of Provo for a public park. The first park in Lindon was called Park Boulevard and it served as a children's playground until 1954 when it was replaced by Park Rimmed Drive. In 1978, the city of Provo purchased the land from the Lindons and renamed it Park Place. In 1990, Provo dedicated an adjacent park to George W. and Emma Lindon Sr., who had died in 1988.
