By 1851 Atherton had built a road through Cedar City which became known as "The Turnpike." In 1853 President James K. Polk designated Cedar City as the site for what would eventually become Lindon after he toured the area with William Clayton while on his way from Washington D.C., one of Polk's many stops on his nationwide tour that year. The site for the city was chosen because it wasadjacent to both Cedar Vale (later Cottonwood) Creek and Cache Valley National Forest--two places where timber could be found cheaply and sustainably without being damaging or damaging nearby towns or ranges). Lindon began its growth slowly due to lack of transportation options, but soon enoughroads were built connecting it with other towns in southern Weber County and northern Tooele County; this allowed for easier shopping, commuting, education, entertainment, health care, and agricultural purposes across these disparate areas.
