When the first Americans arrived in Utah, they were not sure what to make of this vast and empty land. They had seen only Indian paintings and sketches, and no sign of human habitation. So they set out to explore, promulging the belief that any land new to them would be filled withMoabites, Arches National Park notwithstanding. In 1847, Brigham Young ordered his men to build a fort at Lehi (later renamed Salt Lake City) in order to protect the area from Kiowa raiding parties. The fort was completed in 1849 and served as an important military base for many years. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 965 which regulated gun ownership within the Union states. This order made it illegal for citizens of Confederate States of America (CSA) to possess firearms without prior written consent from their state’s government. The CSA unsuccessfully attempted to challenge the executive order in federal court. On July 24th, 1865, ten days after Lincoln’s order was issued, three riflemen managed to purchase rifles and ammunition from a store owner near Lehi and carry them into battle against Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant at Cedar Mountain outside of town. These events are often considered the beginning of The Great Mormon War; one that would last until 1893 when Congress passed an act allowing civilians access to arms

Lehi (pronounced Leh-hee) was a small town in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah. It is located about 20 miles southeast of Salt Lake City and 10 miles northeast of Provo, on the east side of the Great Salt Lake. The name means "place where God is seen." Lehi was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847, and became aighamricized in November 1849 when Brigham Young designated it as the site for his new headquarters. In 1850, David Whitmer and other Latter Day Saints moved to Lehi from Far West, California. In 1852, members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles met at Lehi to organize their church. The original settlement consisted only of men; later women were added. From its inception until 1830, there were no schools or churches in Lehi. However, by 1851 there had been organized religious services at least six times each week in Lundy's Storehouse on Main Street. A Methodist preacher named Elijah Lundy taught school here beginning in September 1850. Lehi experienced rapid growth after it was selected as the site for LDS headquarters during Brigham Young's presidency (1847-49). By 1860 it had a population of 2200 people and boasted one store and three churches. Unfortunately, although some progress was made with regards to education and infrastructure development, virtual isolation from larger society led to social tensions that would eventually erupt into communal violence known as "The Great Mormon Famine," which began around 1857 and killed up to 850 people including many children under 10 years old due to lack food resources available near LeHI
Lehi was founded by the Israelites in the year 3 Nephi 11. It was a small town at the time and only had about 100 people. The town was abandoned after Lehi's death, but it still contains some of his remains.
