Layton, Utah is a city in Weber County, Utah, United States. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. Layton is home to the University of Utah–Layton Campus and the Weber County Fairgrounds. The first settlers in what is now Layton were Mormon missionaries who came from Logan, Utah in 1847. They built a fort on the nearby mesa and called it "Salt Lake City." The first post office in Layton was established in 1851. In 1865, Brigham Young organized the LDS Church here and laid out streets and blocks for what is now downtown Layton. In 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt made Layton his summer home as part of a presidential trip through central Utah. Because of its proximity to Salt Lake City, Layton became an important center for mining and agricultural interests during this time period. In 1916, when World War I began, many people fled eastern Europe due to war-time scarcity of food and resources. Many refugees settled inlaytonsantaquinahamaha beach sidehouses close by salt lake city but soon realized they would have to leave their homes if they wanted work or access to education opportunities within their new community which lay just east of town off US 89A on State Route 190 known today as North Main Street (now Ssl Rd 191). So they formed a group known as the East Side Citizens' Committee which lobbied hard with local officials until statehood was granted to Layton on November 15th 1917 The original courthouse burned down during WWII but was rebuilt using money from oil well drillers that had leased land near by for that purpose .
