LAYTON, UT (December 5, 2002)-- Layton is a town in Utah that became known for its Brigham Young University (BYU) campus. The population was 27,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The town was founded by Apostle Orson Scott Card in 1847 as a small farming community on the east side of Bear River near what is nowLayton College. In 1850, Layton was incorporated as an unincorporated village and then as a city in 1902. The name of the city comes from John Layton, one of Card's missionaries who arrived there in 1851. In 1911, BYU moved to what would become Layton and developed it into a major educational center with over 60 undergraduate and graduate programs across six faculties. Today, BYU has over 12,000 alumni living throughout many countries around the world. The university also administers several sports teams including men's basketball and women's soccer; both compete in Division I NCAA athletics conferences. Bible Studies has been one of Layton's most popular fields since its inception as an agricultural community back in the 1800s when Alma Mater was first preached there under Joseph Smith Sr.'s direction. In 1879, Layton became a city when it merged with nearby Cedar City. The population reached 7,000 by 1910 but had declined to 6,000 by 1920 due to World War I and other economic factors. By 1930, however, Layton had recovered to its pre-war levels and reached 9,000 residents again by 1970; however this number increased only slightly until 1990 when it peaked at 11,500 residents because of suburban development around the city limits).
