The Layton Massacre took place on December 24, 1856, when members of the Mormon Battalion were massacred by Mexican soldiers while they were being transported to Fort Douglas in Utah. The massacre was one of the deadliest natural disasters in Utah history and is memorialized with a statue outside of the LDS temple in Salt Lake City.
