Layton, Utah was founded in 1902 as a small town on the edge of the Salt Lake Valley. The town quickly grew and by 1910 it had a population of over 1,000 people. One of the main reasons for this growth was the opening of the railroad in Layton, which made it easy to get goods to and from markets throughout the valley. In 1916–17 layover passengers on an Amtrak train that derailed nearLayton caused several injuries which led to a political uproar over railroad safety; this led to passage of the Railway Labor Act of 1919 which mandated higher standards for railway workers. Latter-day Saints built a large church in 1922 with land donated by Jens Weidner (a business partner), one of Layton's first mayors. The new temple became one of Utah's most prominent tourist attractions; it hosted both summertime LDS Church semiannual conferences and major world events including the 1964 Olympic Games and 1976 Summer Olympics In 2006 Layton became home to Weber State University after its merger with another smaller university in Cedar City The townsfolk have long been active participants in local politics through their elected officials: three mayors have served since 2002 (Donald Neely was reelected mayor twice), while seventeen members serve on the school board and four are currently members (the last being current Mayor Brent Witte).

The first post office in Layton opened in 1865. In 1876, Layton hosted the annual Mormon Exposition which showcased American Civilization to visitors from all over the world.
