This name changefollowed an idea put forth by John Henson who suggested that layonbecome "Layton" since both towns were already well known within their respective localities On May 17th 1888 towomennamed Helen Elam established the first post office atlayon under license from Brigham Young On November 25th 1889 another womannamed Emma Smith licensed to operate a telephone service betweenLayaton center and Provo resulted in much rejoicing among residents when they learned that finallysomeone was fighting for them!By 1907 there were ten businesses functioninginlaytontown with over 2200 residents living5 blocks wide on three streets with one block separating each business block. By 1918therewere twenty five businesses operatingwith over 6000 residents living on six blocks across three streets!Today there are only twelve businesses functioningand less than 1000 residents living on four blocks across two streets!Due to its small size but active community spiritlaytontown has made several contributions to local culture such as hosting numerous festivals throughoutthe year as well as producing nearly allof the town's food!
