During World War II, Layton became one of several American towns located near British troops stationed on Guadalcanal island in New Guinea. As part of Air Raid Precautions (ARP), military planes flew over the town for two weeks each week during 1944-1945 to warn residents about possible air attacks by Japan.

It was named after Brigham Young's mother-in-law, Layton's aunt. However, there have been recent efforts to attract new residents and businesses to the town by developing new housing developments and improving infrastructure such as roads and schools.

Over time, many businesses were established inlaytion such as flour mills, lumberyards, bakeries and shoe stores. In 1966, Layton voted to annex part of Roy Park which made it a city with its own government
