Layton, Utah is a town in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 10,569 at the 2010 census. Layton is located on the eastern edge of the Wasatch Mountains and is bordered by Logan to the east, Ogden to the south and west, Midvale to the north and east and Weber County to the northwest. The town straddles both banks of Cache River.
The first settler in Layton was James Fenton who arrived in 1847 from Illinois. He started a small farm near what is now Layton High School. In 1857 Major John C. Fremont discovered coal mines in this area which led to laydownmining operations in Layton starting in 1860-1862 by Jules Aiken and others including George Wetheralds (of Wetheralds mine).
In 1862 Brigham Young issued an order calling for all men over 23 years of age to come westward under military guard and prospect for land. Thousands of Mormons followed Young's orders and some 400 families moved into what would become Layton while others traveled farther west to Beaver Dam or Provo City where they began construction of homes and other infrastructure needed for their new settlement. By 1865 there were 9 churches with 1,500 members living in four blocks within 3 miles of each other on Center Street between Second Avenue (now State Street)and Springdale Boulevard (now South State Street).
The development that followed during 1865-1870 was largely due to two factors: increased uranium mining activity at nearby Cottonwood Mines beginning about 1865; as well as railroad transportation which made it possible for goods from West Valley City (now Salt Lake City)to arrive here much earlier than would have been possible had it not been for these developments. From 1870 until 1915 there were a total of 102 businesses operating out of 20 blocks plus three stores & one grocery store; 21 schools operated out of 25 blocks plus twenty-one academies; 12 Masonic Lodges had lodges organized within 5 miles radius; 6 auto mechanics shops had opened up; 8 blacksmith shops opened up; 7 grain elevators became operational Additionally many residences were built during this time such as Sheshan House just south of Center Street between First Avenue (now State Street)and Springdale Boulevard when it went on sale auction block October 15th 1895.
During World War I Layton served as a garrison town providing munitions storage & armament production facilities along Cache River northeast corner lot owned by Captain Henty< ref="" title="" href="/wiki/Layington_Utah_during_World_War_I">Layingtons role during World War I< br /> After World War I most residents returned home but some stayed until about 1950 when they left again< ref="" title="" href="/wiki/Layingtons_remaining%C3%A4itizens/> Laysons remaining citizens

Layton is a town in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 3,914 at the 2010 census. Layton is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1887 by John L. Layton and his family as a ranching community on the east side of what is now Layton Valley. In 1912, LDS Church president Lorenzo Snow made Layton an official city and laid the cornerstone for what would eventually become BYU's main campus. The current downtown core of Layton was built between 1928 and 1932 as a result of the boom in cattle production that followed World War I; it was then called "The Cottonwoods." In 1922, LDS Church president Heber C. Grant designated Layton Hospital as the first hospital in Utah dedicated to serving patients with mental illness or physical disabilities. In 1951, layman Orson Scott Card opened Provo-based First United Methodist Hospital; both hospitals were closed in 2001 but reopened as separate entities within the present day University of Utah Health Sciences Center complex (University Medical Centre). In 1959, layman Loren Wirth designed and constructed what would become Brigham Young University's first dormitory—the Main Building—and also began construction on adjacent Ricks School buildings which would house undergraduate students until 1963 when they were moved to new buildings on campus across South Temple Street from Provo Municipal Stadium. As enrollment grew at BYU and other universities throughout Utah during the 1960s through 1970s, more buildings were needed to accommodate expanded facilities and student growth; accordingly, Main Building demolition began in 1971 and all remaining Ricks School structures were razed over following extended renovation that included underground parking garagefacilities and an open-air amphitheater for sports events which continued until 1984 when athletic operations moved to nearby Rice-Eccles Stadium . This redevelopment led to increased traffic congestion on South Temple Street around Main Building site whereupon Mayor Harry Bormann developed a plan dubbed "The Boulevard," whereby sidewalks were widened northward along South Temple Street from 400 feet (120 m) to 650 feet (200 m) wide with bus stopings located at every 5 feet (1 m) interval; vehicular traffic moves off street onto long gravel drive leading up hill into university property while pedestrians walk down opposite sidewalk
