The Layton Rifle and Pistol Company was formed in 1892. It became the Layton Gunnery & Machine Shop in 1896. The company was disbanded in 1898, but reactivated as the Layton Rifle and Pistol Club in 1899. In 1902, it changed its name to the Layton Rifle and Pistol Company again. The company remained active until 1914 when it merged with the Utah Rifle and Pistol Association to form the American Rifle & Pistol Association (ARPA).
Layton is a town in Davis County, Utah, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. Layton is located on the eastern edge of Davis County and is bordered by Cedar City to the north, Springdale to the east, and Stroudsburg to the south. The biblical Layton was a small area near Jerusalem that Jacob took as his inheritance when he sold his farm in Gerar (now Hebron) to Laban in Genesis 27. According to 1 Chronicles 16:13-24, Joseph built a mill there and named it after his ancestor Lamech. In 1847 Mormon missionaries from Logan traveled through Layton with handcarts carrying goods for winter storage on their way to Salt Lake City. After arriving in December 1847 they began working at two local mines; one called "Hurt" and the other "Gooch". On January 6th of 1850 Brigham Young rode into town with seventy men following him on horseback on snowshoes and asked for suggestions about where he should build an LDS church. When no one could give him an idea he ordered them all inside the temple while he went outside and started chopping down trees for lumber. Ultimately layon became home to more than fifty miles of railroad tracks running through it which made it an important center for trade during early Mormon settlement in Davis Counties

The town grew slowly due to its remote location and lack of transportation options until the arrival of the railroad in 1892. The first post office in Layton was established on November 15, 1890. By 1907, Layton had become a town with a population of over 10,000 residents. By 1912, Layton had become an incorporated municipality with a full-time police force and fire department. In 1977, Layton became the home of Weber State University after it moved from Logan to Davis County from Provo City. In 1992, Weber State merged with Utah Valley University to form Brigham Young University-Hawaii (BYU-H). In 2003 BYU-H purchased the defunct Utah Valley Colleege School which housed many students who transferred from other universities during that time period when BYU-H was transitioning into its current form as an NCAA Division I university while still being affiliated with LDS Church schools such as Brigham Young Univ., Weber State Univ., and New Mexico Highlands Univ.. The most recent major development in town has been the opening of several new businesses including CarMax retail store (), Better Place fitness studio (), GameStop () and Sears (). layTON has also seen construction projects such as HVAC permits for several new buildings (), apartments (), restaurants () and even an amusement park ().
Layington was founded in 1847 by James Layton and his wife of twenty-four years, Hannah. The town was named for General David Layton, who had fought in the Mexican War and beenDecorated with the Medal of Honor. JamesLayton became a prosperous farmer and served as Mayor from 1857 to 1861. He built the first school in Layton and donated land for a courthouse and jail. The town grew rapidly due to its location near the Central Pacific Railroad and its access to water resources. By 1870, Layton had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1876, local citizens formed the Utah Territorial Legislature to propose legislation creating an independent state in southwestern Utah. The bill passed both houses but was vetoed by President Salmon P. Chase because he believed that Arizona would be chosen as the new territorial capital instead.
