Ammunition has a long and colorful history in Layton, Utah. The town was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847, and early ammunition manufacturers included Volcanic Ammunition Company, Winchester Ammunition Company, and Ordnance Ammunition Manufacturing Company. The first commercial magazine rifle shooting event took place at the Layton Rifle Range on July 10th of that year. In 1851, the first blacksmith shop opened in Layton. By 1860, there wereseveral businesses in town including an ammunition store and a cooperage. On November 11th of that year, Brigham Young organized the Latter Day Saint Church in Layton with forty-five members. After serving as president of the church from 1830 to 1838 and leading its Salt Lake Valley Branch from 1850 to 1857, Young became one of laymen's main political opponents. In 1861, he organized a company to purchase rounds for his new $5 per day subscription military handgun called "The Liahona". The ammo company continued operations until it went out of business in 1865 due to competition from handguns made by Colt Firearms Corporation. In 1865, Brigham Young moved the LDS Church headquarters from Nauvoo Illinois to Salt Lake City Utah. This ushered in a new era for ammunition production as local companies geared up to producequality rounds for rifles and pistols used by Mormons living throughout thewest country during this time period. Many famous firearms designers worked at these companies such as George Minkler (who designed both Smith & Wesson revolvers)and John Browning (founder of Browning Arms). Ammo products played an important rolein Utah militia conflicts during this time period as well; for example, weapons like shotguns which fired buckshot or birdshot were popular among Mormon soldiers because they could penetrate large numbers of unarmored infantry without harming their targets. Beginning around 1920s various arms manufacturers began developingbombshell cartridges specifically designed for hunting big game animals including lions lionesses and elephants with flash hiders consistingof small metal pieces set into powder cases that created an effective muzzle blast against these large predators thereby allowing huntersto shoot them down close without risking injury or death themselves
