Scope mounts have been a part of American gun culture for over 100 years. Originally designed to help the shooter keep their rifle organized and focused, scope mounts have since became an integral part of many shooters' arsenals. The first scope mounts were created in 1892 by Philadelphia-based designer Julius Schwartz. The design was based on his experience with rifles mounted on dogsleds during the Mexican-American War. Schwartz's mount helped to popularize the use of scopes on firearms, and it would be until 1903 that any real advances were made in scope mounting technology. During World War I, America's leading manufacturers produced mounts for both military and civilian rifles. One of these companies, HVAC Inc., went bankrupt after producing only a few hundred units. However, other companies such as Richardson & Richardson continued production until shortly before World War II when they too went bankrupt due to increased competition from foreign manufacturers. As WWII began, American manufacturers once again began producing Scope Mounts specifically for handguns and shotguns. This saw a resurgence in popularity for Scope Mounts because handgun collectors could now enjoy high quality optics without having to worry about manufacturing shortages or import tariffs. By the end of WWII, ScopeMount production had resumed at a healthy level with more than 1 million units being manufactured worldwide . In the early 1970s, technological advancements led to the development of 'smart' scope mounts which allowed users to change magnification settings while still keeping their weapon unloaded and sighting in! This innovation quickly gained notoriety amongshooters due to its convenience and versatile nature. SmartScope Mounts continue to be popular today as they provide an easy way for shooters to maintain their shooting skills despite changes in ammunition availability or weather conditions
