Despite efforts by law enforcement officers to restore order, by December 8th rampant looting had become so bad that Mayor Brigham Young called out the National Guard to help put an end to the disorder. In January 1871, an even larger hurricane struck southern Utah causing extensive damage including $2 million in total damages reported within two days alone! By May 15th however, all but two percent of roofing throughout downtown were gone from what had been a disastrous typhoon season for the state! The following month saw yet another destructive storm when Hurricane killed at least six people and injured scores more in central Utah before making landfall again just north of Cedar City on July 5th smashed homes and businesses completely into ruin! Overall this season resulted in $24 million worth of losses with over ninety percent occurring within seventy-eight hours! The devastating effects of hurricanes continued through fall as well with totals totaling $64 million across eight months!

A $5 000 relief fund was set up to help hurricane victims; however only $2 050 was distributed to residents within two weeks after the storm’s landfall. The town erected a damaged courthouse but it remained unusable until 1949 when it was replaced by a new one. In 1978-79 Hurricane experienced some heavy damage from an 8 Track fire which destroyed most of the main building including Chapel Street Baptist Church which left about 100 families homeless for several days following the firestorming event that followed. Reconstruction began early in 1979 as part of major government initiative called “Reclaiming America: The American Dream” with money raised from local taxes supplemented by private donations and foundations.
