In 1845, Hurricane destroyed most of the Fort Bridger Indian School west of Utah City. The school was rebuilt in 1849 and again in 1865. In 1927, Hurricane destroyed an LDS congregation in Cedar City. The church was rebuilt and continued to serve the community until it closed its doors in 1985. Mormon settlers first arrived in what is now Utah Territory on November 24, 1800, when Brigham Young led a group of Mormons south from Nauvoo, Illinois, overland through what is now Wyoming Territory. On December 6th, 1800, they founded a small town called Cumorah near present-day Hurricane (later known as Provo). The first permanent settler in what is now Utah Territory was Martin Harris who arrived on July 14th, 1847. Harris built a ranch at present-day Huntington Beach along the Great Salt Lake River which he named "Harris Land". By 1860 there were over 100 residents living within the boundaries of present-day Hurricane (later known as Provo) County. Two years later on October 15th 1864, Brigham Young ordered all Latter Day Saints east of the Rocky Mountains to move westward into this newly acquired territory because of increasing threats from Native Americans posed by hostile Sioux Indians and also because President Andrew Johnson had declared that any slave state or free state located east of Missouri would be automatically annexed into Mexico if it did not secede from that country within 10 days. This order represented a turning point for Utah; ever since then it has been one of only two Ute reservations managed by Mormons - although both are open to non-Mormon citizens today. On January 8th 1870 Joshua Lanyon became the first white settler to reside permanently within present day Hurricane (later known as Provo) County when he purchased land at Park Meadows from Cushman Pollock for $2 per acre. Today Park Meadows is home to many interesting historical buildings such as Lanyon’s Store which operated between 1870 and 1888 and served as an important stop on stagecoach routes between Provo and Ogden; Ranch House which was used by local farmers until 1925 when it was donated to the University of Utah Library; Lanyon’s Cabin which provided lodging for mountain men during their winter travel up into central Idaho during winter time; and Kahlo House which is currently being restored after being listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. During World War II many members of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints serving aboard USS Enterprise (CVN 66) took refuge here during HMS Valiant's transatlantic crossing outbound from Liverpool Bay on September 9th 1944 while supplies were available ashore at US Naval Base Pearl Harbor pretenseing to be evacuating Japanese nationals with Emperor Hirohito about to be executed pursuant to Executive Order 9066 issued pursuant thereto including orders received by Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto related thereto upon his discovery thereof aboard USS Enterprise" [1]. Some believe that Captain James Halsey may have been responsible for saving more than 2200 lives during World War II off Japan's coast[2].
