In the early 1800s, Hurricane was one of the most important mining towns in the Salt Lake Valley. The town was founded by Mormon settlers in 1847 and grew rapidly due to its easy access to water and mineral resources. By 1860, Hurricane had a population of over 1,000 people. During the Civil War, Hurricane was used as a supply point for General Brigham Young's army. In 1863, General Weber attacked Captain John Atherton's brigade at Battle Creek; when Captain Atherton returned with reinforcements later that day, he found Weber's forces surrounding his town with artillery batteries. The siege began when Captain Atherton called for help from his brother-in-law Bundy Franklin who had set up a small cannon near the edge of town to protect his residents; however, no one came except for volunteer militiamen under First Lieutenant Alfred Hundley. After an hourlong battle that saw both sides suffer heavy losses, Weber ordered his men back into town while he continued pursuit ofCaptain Atherton's brigade across Battle Creek; upon their return to town they discovered that Weber's forces were more numerous than they'd anticipated and had burned down all but two homes in town before retreating back towards Liberty Jail (now known as The Huntington Museum). In 1865 local leader James Ritchie petitioned Congress for a charter from Provo City Council authorizing him to establish a new city just east of hurricane named after himself – Ritchiestown – which would have granted him unlimited power to govern the city without interference from Provo City authorities or from any other municipality within Utah County (later renamed Sandy Valley). The name "Hurricane" was given to the town by LeRoy A. Hitchcock in 1923 as a tribute to his father-in-law, George P. "Pep" Hitchcock who had been killed in an airplane accident two years earlier while flying for The Wings Airlines in Hurricane, Texas. In 1926 Hurricane was renamed after then-Governor of Utah Orval Faubus because he had ordered state troopers to break up a peaceful protest against what he saw as unfair housing prices near hurricane's landfall on July 27 of that year. faubus also became known as 'the storm king' due to his role in causing widespread damage and evacuations during the storm which killed more than 30 people and injured scores more before it dissipated over the Ogden Mountains about 100 miles east of Salt Lake City on August 3rd

It was renamed Hurricane after its first postmaster, John A. "Jock" Hurricane (1863-1927). The first store opened in 1865 and the first school in 1870. In 1892, a canal was built through the community to bring water from Hinkle Reservoir to residents east of Clearfield. In 1903, Hurricane began serving as an agricultural center for Kane County due to its location on Cache Valley's Powder River Plain and its access to irrigation water from nearby Snowy Mountain Spring. By 1907, most residents had abandoned hurricane because it became too difficult to agriculture with high winds and rainstorms frequent during that year's summertime rainsstorms.
