Holladay, Utah is a small town in the Wasatch Front region of Utah. The population was 2,584 at the 2010 census. Holladay is located on the eastern edge of the Salt Lake Valley and bordered by Weber County to the north, Davis County to the east, Kane County to the south, and Carbon County to the west. The town was founded in 1847 by Brigham Young and his army as a base for raiding horse herds in what is now Weber and Davis Counties. By 1860 Holladay had become a local agricultural center with over 100 businesses employing around 1,000 people. In 1903 Holladay was renamed after Major-General George A. Custer during the American Civil War because many of its residents were Unionists who chose not to support either side. Holladay has experienced some recent growth in recent years due to its location near Interstate 80 which provides access to both Salt Lake City and Provo Canyon National Park. Additionally, Holladay is home to several high school districts such as Pleasant Grove School District No. 9 which serves students from Preble Elementary through High School; Cottonwood Hills Schools District No 5 which serves students from Preble Middle throughHigh School; and Hinkley Heights Schools District No 7 which serves students from Silverthorn Middle throughHigh School.

The first lighted firearms were made by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1795. The first public shooting was held at the Monmouth County Fairgrounds on July 14, 1836, with a revolver from James H. Winchester.
Holladay was founded in 1871 by J.D. Holladay and his wife, Emma. The Holladays were Mormon missionaries who left their home of Logan, Utah to pioneer in what is now Holladay County, Utah. They arrived in December 1871 and named the settlement for Brigham Young’s father-in-law, James Fenton Holladay. For many years, the town was the only stop on the Mormon Trail between Salt Lake City and Nephi, UT. In 1902, when Holladay became a city, it had a population of just over 100 people. Today, there are just 10 residents living in Holladay City limits with an additional 20 or so visitors each year coming to see the First Vision Museum and Pioneer Cemetery located within its boundaries. The first settler on this land was Jno Crain who arrived early in 1872 while looking for land to build a cabin on near the present day intersection of State Street and US Highway 89A (now US Highway 89). Other early settlers included Lewis Barker who came around July 1st of that year and erected a log cabin about 8 miles east of today’s town limits on what is now known as Barker Farmstead Road. John Dickson also settled hereabouts around this time but his building did not last long as he lost interest in farming after discovering gold nearby at Promontory Point Mines (now Provo). The first post office was established hereon July 2nd of 1874 by Wm Henson with mail carried from Logan via wagon road from Emigration Station #2 about 12 miles west of today’s town limits onto State Road 611 which ran southwest from Cache Valley into Promontory Valley where it crossed US Highway 89A at milepost 584 before heading southeast along CR 611/State Road 611 until reaching Cache Valley again at milepost 775 east of today’s town limits where it continued northeast until reaching Promontory Point Mines where he prospected for gold prior to carrying out his purchase order (see Google Earth screenshot below). Today we have evidence that pluralism existed in Early LDS Settlement Days as one man may have built more than one cabin at different times! Holladay was founded by Brigham Young in 1847. It was named after Holladay County, Texas, which was then part of Mexico.
