Holladay, Utah is a small town located in the Wasatch Mountains of southern Utah. The population was 997 at the 2000 census. Holladay is named after John Holladay, an early settler and chairman of the first territorial government in what is now Sevier County. The Holladay community started as a cluster of log cabins near the headwaters of the Weber River in 1876. A post office was established here in 1879, and by 1886 there were four stores, two hotels and one gristmill in operation. By 1907 there were six stores, nine hotels, three restaurants and one bank. The mill closed in 1922 but local industries continued until about 1975 when all but one business closed down due to competition from nearby Ogden and other towns on the American Fork River valley. One significant event that took place during this time was World War II when Holladay played a key role as a military airfield for Operation Crossroads which transported troops and supplies across country to fight against Nazi Germany. After war ended, many people returned to their homes while others moved out into neighboring towns such as Orem or Provo because they found better opportunities available elsewhere within Utah or outside of America. Today, most residents are retirees living locally while some still work part-time jobs at local businesses. As with most small towns throughout history, cultural aspects have been very important to residents hereabouts; including music (hundreds if not thousands) nights spent listening to 78 rpm records played off radios or "walkmans" set up around town before going to bed; agricultural production (farming has always been an important aspect of life here) with crops such as beans, corn and rice being grown on large plots surrounding shops serving fresh produce from local gardens; winters being quite long without much chance for outdoor activities so citizens pulled together for various winter sports events like snowball fights or bike races that often attracted hundreds of participants each year; games like checkers or chess being popular pastimes enjoyed by all ages
Holladay was founded by Joaquin Holladay in 1847. He named the town after his father, John Holladay. The first post office was established in 1848, and the first store was opened in 1850. In 1853, Holladay organized a school district. The population of Holladay grew rapidly during the early years of its existence, reaching 100 residents by 1860. By 1870, however, the population had decreased to about 50 residents due to heavy immigration from Mexico and other parts of the United States. The town experienced some success during the late 19th century including becoming one of the largest cotton buyers in Utah Territory. However, during World War I local production ceased due to lack of demand and later economic recession led to decreases in population until it reached its low point at around 30 residents by 1930. However, following World War II Holladay experienced a rebirth with growth throughout most of the 20th century as a bedroom community for Salt Lake City until becoming an official city within Salt Lake City on December 15, 1996 when it merged with Provo annexed areas south and east of Intermountain Highway (now Interstate 84)
