Highland, Utah is a small town located in western Utah. The population of Highland was 1,876 at the 2000 census. The community was founded in 1902 by Scotsman Walter L. Ferguson and his wife Jessie. Highland is the only incorporated municipality in Wasatch County and it is part of the Ogden-Clearfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is named after Highlanders who had settled there during the late 1800s and early 1900s. One of Highland's earliest residents was Scottish farmer Alexander Turnbull, who arrived in 1892. By 1910, about 60% of all businesses were operated by Scottish immigrants living in Highland or nearby towns such as Logan and Carbon Hill. Many local organizations are based in or have been founded within Highland; these include the Highlanders Association, which helps promote Scots culture and history; the Scottish Cultural Center; the Highlander Monument Committee; and Highland Presbyterian Church—the first church built outside Glasgow, Scotland, in 1907 (though originally built as an Episcopal parish). In 2002, Highlands lost its high school when Parkview School Corporation became a charter member of Intermountain Education Consortium (IEC). Parkview closed its doors on September 11th that year after failing to meet IEC academic standards for two consecutive years. In response to this setback, many residents banded together to form "Homeschool Highlands" to keep their schools open until a new school could be found for them. On October 22nd2002, Homeschool Highlands organized a public meeting to discuss possible solutions to their school's predicament including transferring students from Parkview into other schools within IEC or building another high school specifically for homeschoolers. A makeshift gymnasium also served as the meeting room for participants ultimately resulting in a proposal from IEC members to build a new high school for Highlandtown Elementary School which would be open fall 2013 instead of having Homeschool Highlands' old building remain unused until 2016 when it will finally expire! Highland has experienced many changes over time including annexation by Clearfield Township in 1955; growth due to agriculture and ranching industry during World War II that led to more people moving into town ; gentrification during the 1990s with more people coming through town looking for cheaper housing prices than what they could find elsewhere ; methamphetamine addiction leading to social disorganization among low income residents culminating with acts of vandalism against businesses targeting drug dealers ; increased traffic activity due mainly due to Interstate 40 construction projects that disrupted daily life along Main Street throughout most of 2006 but also causing some storefront closures while other business opened up because no one was using their restroom facilities during construction so business owners were able to reopen without losing customers
