The history of Highland starts with its founding as a Mormon Settlement on the property that now makes up the city of Highland. In 1847, Brigham Young issued an order calling for all Mormons living in or near Salt Lake City to move westward into what would become Utah Territory. Many of these Latter-day Saints chose to migrate to what is now Highland because it was one of the few places where they could find land that was free from Spanish influence and Mormon persecution. The first settlers arrived in 1849, and within a year had built a garrison for their new community at Fort Bridger on thefork River. They named their new settlement after President George Washington's Mount Vernon estate in Virginia, which they hoped would provide them with protection from Spanish attack should Mexico try to take over their territory. Over time, Fort Bridger grew into one of the most important military posts in Utah Territory; it served as both headquarters for the militia and as a prison for criminals and political dissidents alike. In addition to its strategic importance, Fort Bridger also provided excellent grazing land for cattle and sheep ranchers around this time period; this contributed significantly to the development of Highland over time into one of the leading towns in Utah County. Despite its strategic location, however,Fort Bridger never saw significant military action during its lifetime; instead it mainly served as an administrative center for all aspects of Mormon life here at Highlandtown (including religious services, elections, marriages etc.). This was changing soon after fortification began: starting around 1870 Mexican forces began attacking Indian communities along the southern borderlands ofUtah Territory; this caused much grief among LDS leaders hereabouts as Mexican troops began raiding American settlements en masse throughout Arizona etc., destroying properties indiscriminately (and sometimes taking innocent lives). As things got worse between Mexico and America culminating with US interventions against Mexican forces at Buena Vista Springs near Tucson AZ on September 16th 1871 "the day Lincoln died", some 1 400 Mormons took refuge at Fort Bridger including Brigham Young himself who ordered his Councilors not to flee when attacked by Mexicans led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna across dry river bed just east side S Rancho San Juan Capote Rd today – Aug 9 1880 In response Congress enacted legislation known as An Act Relative To captures Of Indians On December 15th 1874 James Wickersham Ulysses S Grant delivered House speech before voting 565-35 declaring martial law suspending rights & privileges enjoyed under Constitution
