In 1916, the town built a new substation on Tenth Street between Third Avenue and Second Avenue for electrical purposes. The old substation served as engine house until it burned down in 1978. In 1922, the town built a new school on Ninth Street between Third Avenue and Second Avenue for use as the high school. At that time, there were only six schools in Highlandtown (not including Stonington). The school board decided to build a separate high school because they felt that Highlandtown needed its own high school specifically because of its growing population of students! The first high school class graduated from Highlandtown High School in 1928! In 1951, Scottish-born Gunnar Svartholm opened his first gun shop in Highlandsville, Virginia near Charlottesville VA Beach USA with intentions of selling shotguns only! Gunnar quickly gained popularity within this small community due to his innovative sales methods which allowed customers to buy shotguns at any time during business hours! Highland is located on the banks of the Weber River and is bordered to the west by Cottonwood Heights and to the north by Sugar House. The community was founded in 1879 as a mining camp on the bluffs above the Weber River. It took its name from high mountain range that can be seen to the east of town. By 1907, Highland had become a small farming community with a post office and only two businesses: a store and a blacksmith shop. In 1925, Highland began receiving aid from The Rockefeller Foundation through their Rural Electrification Administration (REEA). This program gave rural towns throughout America power to sell electricity to their residents without having to build their own poles or wires. In 1930 John D.] Rockefeller donated land for what would become Highland's college; Brigham Young University-Hawaii (BYU-Hawaii). during World War II, Highland became home to an airbase used by The U.S Air Force during World War II.; however it closed in 1946 due to budget cuts within The U.S Army Air Forces' Second Tactical Air Force (2 TAF). In 1963, Highlands became home to one of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' (LDS) largest temple complexes—the $125 million Salt Lake Temple Complex which replaced an earlier temple built in 1911 on adjacent farmland that had been donated by George Romney (). Because of its location near several major metropolitan areas in North America—including Denver and Salt Lake City—Highland quickly regained some lost ground after Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005; but it continuesshrinking as fewer people move into its village center while more people commute into nearbySalt Lake City or Denver because those cities have larger job markets and greater access to education resources outside of rural areas ().
