Highland is located on the Wasatch Front and is bordered by Cedar City to the east, Provo to the west, and Sandy (Utah) to the north. It sits on a high plateau surrounded by mountains. The history of Highland can be traced back to 1855 when gold was discovered in nearby Cedar Mesa and miners from nearby Independence Mines began moving into what would become Highland. In 1868, Mormon pioneers arrived from eastern Utah and founded Glasgow Landing on the slopes of Mt. Carmel as an agricultural community near present-day Highland Creek. In 1875, Tom Cochran opened another gold mine in nearby Clearfield which led to increasedmining activity throughout Kane County and within a few miles of Highlandtown itself. By 1907 there were twenty-one mines operating in Kane County with over $1 million in production value; this amount has since grown to over $25 million today! In 1916–1917 two small villages were developed around Highway 191: Old Town Highlands (later known as Scottsdale) on land owned by mining magnate Edwin Harkness Sr., while new towns sprang up around other Gold Rush era businesses such as grain elevators and hotels: Red Butte (now Davis), Mount Carmel (later renamed Forney), Park City (today's Draper), Quorum Hill (later called Keystone Heights), etc., all surrounding beautiful valleys named after prominent residents or Mountains: Carbon Hill、Mount Carmel Heights、Northeast Peak、Scottsdale Valley。 I n 1933 both Scottsdale Valley Village No 4 and Northeast Peak Village No 2 were abandoned due to lack of customers or resources; theseVillages are now included among numerous ghost towns located throughout Kane County . Today only Carbon Hill remains functioning as a commercial center with several dozen apartments/houses rental properties
