Herriman, Utah is a small town in the Wasatch Range of the Rocky Mountains. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. Herriman is situated at an elevation of 4,948 feet (1,500 m). The name is derived from the Hidatsa word heri-man, meaning "place where there are many deer." The first settlers to Herriman were ethnic Hidatsa who had come overland from what is now North Dakota in 1876. They built a small cabin on the east side of town and started out farming saltbush and other crops. A better location for their farm was found on top of a hill overlooking the town. In 1902, they began to build a sawmill and store which became known as the "Herriman store". In 1916, they built a school which continues to serve today as one of the most important institutions in Herriman. In 1954, Moroni Lumber Company opened up shop in nearby Park City and began shipping logs direct from his mills to Herriman across country. That same year sawmills were closed down due to lack of customers and the mill went bankrupt. In 1966-67, local entrepreneur Don LeBlanc reopened it with new machinery and increased production; this brought more business into town until 1984 when he sold it all to Pacific Northwest Logging & Manufacturing Corporation (PNLMC). It continued operations as NLMC's Herriman Mill until it was taken over by Rio Tinto Mining Company in 1996. At that time it became part of Rio Tinto's Park City mine complex. As part of Rio Tinto's mill expansion program nears its end,,the plant announced plans in early 2009 to close all its coal mines but keep herring processing alive by selling herring off for cash or commuting transportation costs only while continuing production of some products like aluminum cans made from their product! The town was founded by John Herriman in 1868 and named for him. He and his family bought 640 acres of land in the area now known as Herriman from the David Major Land Company. They began to build homes there in 1869, and the first post office was opened in 1870. The town grew rapidly thereafter, becoming one of Duchesne County's most important towns. In 1951, following stateshood within the United States and changes to federal funding formulas that year due to budgetary constraints,[1] Herriman became one of 156 towns and cities within Salt Lake City's newly created city limits.[2] However, because Salt Lake City wasn't allowed to annex any more towns or cities without proper annexation petitions from all of their constituent communities—including Herriman—the city council instead passed legislation limiting annexation to those municipalities that had submitted such petitions.[3] In 1960,[4] following further adjustments made to municipal boundaries due to population growth within Salt Lake City limits,[5][6][7][8][9][10], her Ramsdell Park neighborhood annexed into Salt Lake City through resolution number 5287 (adding 1/8 mile along State Street from South Temple Street eastward).
