Herriman, Utah is a town in Uinta County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Herriman post office was founded in 1892 and closed in 1971. The town is named after Captain John A. Herriman who served as a scout for the Mormon Battalion during the Mexican-American War and later became an officer with that battalion. In 1892, Herriman's first store had only four shelves and sold groceries and ammunition to soldiers on leave from Fort Bridger; however, by 1896 his store had increased its size to twelve shelves selling general merchandise such as flour, soap, clothing, hardware, saddles and guns along with books and newspapers from Provo. In 1951 the townsite of Red Hill was annexed into Herriman while Cedar Mesa remained unincorporated until it also joined in 2001 when both towns merged forming one municipality under the name of Herriman-Cedar Mesa Township. The townsite of Red Hill which includes most of rural Uinta County was laid out by Alfred Payson Thorp who purchased 301 acres (122 hectares) east of what is now downtown Herriman in 1901 from David Waddell for $1 per acre ($40 per km²). The Thorps laid out a community called "Red Hill" on their land which included six stores (the first being built by Elisha Cushman), two banks (First National Bank and McKay Trust Company), four residences (including three homes owned by Hyrum Smith), two gardening enterprises run by Mrs. Fenton Beaumont (one near her home on Third Street between Second Avenue South and Main Street) with 50 acres (.24 hectares) of farmland used for orchards next to Eastern State Penitentiary where prisoners were housed before release; five miles west were several small farms that contributed one acre (.30 hectare) to each development; about 100 people lived there at various points over the years including many soldiers who barracks were located there during World War I when much of central Utah was still frontier territory controlled by Mexico under American occupation; mail service arrived via wagons drawn up behind fences into adjacent fields before being delivered through open country down long pathways back to Cedar City

The city also has two schools - one middle school and one high school - as well as two churches (one Lutheran and one Catholic) and several businesses including Bakersfield Cheese Company (now part of Kraft Foods), Topo Chico Resources (a uranium mine), Meijer Grocery Store (now Macy's Department Stores), Purdy's Hardware Store (now part of JCPenney), First National Bank (now Wells Fargo Advisors) & Trust Company(formerly Goldman Sachs).
Herriman, Utah was founded in 1847 by George Herriman. The town was named for his father, who had been born in England and died in Utah. George Herriman and his wife, Emma, arrived in the Utah Territory on July 10, 1847. They built a log cabin near present-day Herriman and started a small store to sell goods they brought with them from England. In 1850, the couple moved to what is now Cottonwood Heights. They developed a farm that produced fruit trees and vegetables until 1865 when they sold the land to Brigham Young for $1,000.
