The railroad arrived in 1865 and by 1870 there were three train stations within easy driving distance of Herriman: Arvada Station on the Western Pacific Railroad, Deer Valley Station on the Union Pacific Railroad, and Tooele Junction on the Southern Pacific Railway. The town developed quickly because it was convenient to interstate highways as well as railroads. In 1925, Herriman became part of Provo-Orem City when that city expanded southward from its original boundaries into what is now west suburban Salt Lake County. In that year, Provo-Orem annexed what are now east suburban Weber County as well as portions of Ogden County including Herriman Township (including present day Herriman). In 1989, when Provo-Orem City merged with Salt Lake City to form one giant city under common municipal control, much attention was paid to what would happen to Herriman Township which had been annexed by Salt Lake City but not merged into the largercity. After some months of reflection and discussion among city officials and residents alike, it was decided that annexation would not proceed because there were no plans for an adjacent township community within either City limits that could serve as an adequate replacement for Herriman Township should it be discontinued or abandoned altogether during merger proceedings.
